CHINESE BLUE & WHITE POTTERY PAINTING
This project is one of my favourites, as the concept had been developing in my mind for quite some time before being brought to life by students.
Inspired by traditional blue and white pottery from China, we made traditional Chinese ginger & temple jars.
Ancient Chinese artists used a blue mineral called cobalt to paint detailed patterns with floral, nature, & dragon motifs on white pottery. These jars travelled along the Silk Road, where they inspired pottery in places like Japan, England, and the Netherlands.
Although the project began as 2-dimensional, students painted 2 matching vase shapes, which were then glued together and attached to a glass bottle to create the illusion of a 3-dimensional standing vase.
This project was created for the school's annual STEAM Night.

the process
Step 1: Paint solid blue lines for the borders.
Step 2: Use pencil to plan out the vase designs.
Step 3: Paint over the pencil designs with acrylic paint.
Step 4: Use pencil to draw a central image and then trace over it with a water-based marker.
Step 5: Use a thin paintbrush to brush water over the water-based marker to create a bleeding paint effect.
Step 6: Repeat all the steps to create a second vase. Glue the edges of both pieces together and insert a glass bottle inside to help the vase stand upright and create a 3-dimensional effect.
Accommodation 1: Provide a pre-printed template for the student to paint into.
Accommodation 2: Provide a smaller sized vase therefore requiring fewer design elements.
