In this project, we explored street art through the lens of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Using found materials such as pizza boxes, students created expressive portraits with layered acrylic paint, oil pastels, and collaged newsprint.
Students chose an animal they felt best represented their personalities, reimagining it in the style of Basquiat’s iconic dinosaur. These stylized creatures became powerful, symbolic extensions of their identities within the artwork.
Inspired by Basquiat’s signature style, they incorporated crossed-out text and bold symbols. The words they selected reflected positive growth-mindset ideas, expressing who they are and how they see themselves.
Medium: oil pastels, acrylic paint, acrylic markers, newsprint on found materials (cardboard)
