In the spirit of Halloween, our class took inspiration from Edvard Munch’s haunting masterpiece The Scream. This painting was the ideal example for studying emotion and atmosphere. Using oil pastel resist and watercolour on paper, students recreated the swirling skies and eerie atmosphere that make the painting so unforgettable.
To bring the project to life, each student posed in the iconic stance of Munch’s figure, capturing their own “scream” moment in black-and-white photographs. These photos were integrated into their paintings, creating a playful yet dramatic mix of photography and art.
This project was not only about technique, experimenting with resist effects and bold colour choices, but also about exploring how art can capture emotion. Just as Munch described the blood-red sunset that inspired his work, my students used colour and movement to convey feelings of mystery and whimsy.
The result is a gallery of spooky, vibrant reinterpretations that perfectly compliments the Halloween vibe.
